Location
Oscar Suites & Village is strategically located in the best possible place in West Crete: between the world-class coastal resorts of Platanias and Agia Marina. The two resorts are in a distance of less than 10 kilometers from Chania city’s center.
Oscar Suites & Village is also in a very advantageous distance of only 500 meters from the center of Platanias, where you can find literally everything.
Platanias Resort
Platanias is a coastal village and resort west of Chania city, which has become famous all over the world for its great beaches, entertainment and facilities. The name of the village originates from the Greek word “platani”, which means plane tree. And the place is full of plane trees, some of which are just by the beach!
The part of the village that most visitors get to know is the so-called Kato Platanias, or Lower Platanias. This has to do with the magnificent beach of Platanias.
The beach of Platanias is among the best in Crete. Together with the beach of neighboring Agia Marina, the beach of Platanias forms a magnificent four-kilometer long sandy mega-beach. And Oscar Suites & Village ies right in the middle of this wonderful beach.
The beach with the golden-pink sand as the locals call it, with the numerous plane trees and the islet of Thodorou opposite the beach, all make up a magnificent landscape that is hard not to admire. This landscape, together with the crystal clear water and the excellent facilities make Platanias beach one of the most important sights in Crete in its own right!
The beach of Platanias is well organized and ideal for couples and families with children. On or near the beach you can find cafés, taverns and restaurants, mini markets, shops, specialty stores, pharmacies, banks, all kinds of recreational facilities, and much more, in order to make your holidays much more entertaining and enjoyable. In the beach there are also numerous water sport facilities.
The islet of Thodorou opposite Platanias beach is also a must-see, albeit from a distance. This oblong islet with the big cave on its visible side used to be, according to the ancient Greek mythology, a huge monster that attacked the northwest coast of Crete. But Poseidon, the ancient god of the sea, managed to petrify it before it reached the shore – and the big cave is the mythical monster’s open mouth that will be forever open…
Today the islet is a protected environmental area. The reason for this is its present-day inhabitants: the Kri-Kri, the rare and protected wild goats of Crete live and reproduce on the islet, in a place where time stands still for decades, out of any kind of modern development.
Thodorou islet also reminds us of the rich history of Platanias. According to Homer, there were settlements in the area since ancient Greek times. During the Venetian era of Crete, the village was called “Platanea” by the Venetians, who built a large fortress, called “San Teodoro” on top of Thodorou islet, in order to protect Platanea and the western suburbs of Chania city. But the castle could not contain the aggressive force of the Ottomans who managed to conquer Chania and totally destroyed the large castle.
Finally, a visit to Platanias would not be complete without a visit to the so-called “Ano Platanias”, or Upper Platanias. This is the elevated part of the village.
Built upon a hill overlooking the great Platanias beach, Ano Platanias is a typical picturesque village of the Cretan heartland. Although tourism development has left its mark in the area, Ano Platanias has managed to keep its traditional character until today, and you can easily find beautiful traditional houses and small gardens full of blooming flowers.
But the most magnificent sight in Ano Platanias is most possibly its grand views. From the top of the hill, you can admire the amazing vista of Platanias beach, with the islet of Thodorou in front of it and the long scenic distant peninsulas of Rodopou on the west and Akrotiri on the east that form together one of the most magnificent landscapes in Greece.
Agia Marina Resort
Agia Marina is a coastal village and resort, located just 2 kilometers east of Platanias. The name of the village originates from the old church of Agia Marina (Santa Marina) in the village. Today, Agia Marina and Platanias have practically merged in one big oblong town that follows the northwest Crete coastline.
