The Light-House

History

The Venetian lighthouse stands at the harbour entrance of old town. From the original Venetian light–house which dominated the entrance of the harbour, only the base survives today, built with the same sandstone as the Walls. The present light-house, rebuilt during the Egyptian occupation (1821-1841), is different from the original and is rather reminiscent of a minaret, as regards its shape and the inside stone staircase leading to the balcony and the glass tower.
