Season’s greetings from Oscar Suites & Village Hotel in Platanias Chania

17/12/2019

It has been yet another great season for all of us at the Oscar Suites & Village Hotel in Platanias Chania. Once again we met with old, treasured friends and made new, exciting acquaintances. We swam in crystal clear waters and built castles in the golden sands of the famous, adjacent Agia Marina -Platanias beach. We also enjoyed several spectacular dives and our energetic laps at the two pools of Oscar Suites & Village Hotel in Platanias Chania. They were, of course, followed up with some gloriously carefree sunbathing sessions: After all lounger-bound parents were safe in the knowledge that their offspring were kept securely entertained at the two children’s side pools of our hotel in Platanias Chania. We idled our days away and laughed our troubles away; we had scintillating conversations with the like-minded and finally managed to round off this half-finished novel. We took care of our bikini bodies at the gym; but also wolfed down amazing food and drinks at Valentino Pasta & Grill, our restaurant in Oscar Suites & Village Hotel in Platanias Chania.

As 2019 is drawing to a close we’d like to take a minute to count our blessings and to be thankful for all the good things that happened this year. We are also super excited about what’s in store; as we’ll soon be partaking in the Christmas festivities in Chania. This is a quite spectacular, magical time for our city; which wears its finest with countless twinkling lights sparkling amidst its alleyways and streets and plush, gift laden shop windows. So we shall be decorating our Christmas tree as per the prevailing Western custom but we shall also adorn a model sailing boat to honor our long-standing nautical tradition and the seamen in each family. We will be busy baking diples, kourabiedes, and melomakarona, their sweet-smelling scents coming from every home, permeating the air, are nothing short of tantalizing! We will give it a go at the carousel, train and play castle in the park; do our rounds at the ice rink on the stadium and shop from the various Christmas bazaars held in the municipal market. Like everybody else in the city, we will also put on our red and white costumes to join this year’s Santa Run Chania: This is an annual, ultra-fun charity event which has become kind of an institution as a great number of locals and visitors alike take to the streets of the old town prancing around dressed as Santa’s to the sounds of Dj’s.

Opportunities for a good party abound during Christmas in Chania, but so does the element of spirituality and devoutness. Christmas Eve Mass held on at the cave of St. John the Hermit is such an example: The Divine liturgy here is combined with a traditional representation of the birth of Christ in the manger with real animals brought by local farmers. Bonfires are lit, chimes and bells ring joyfully and a big star shines from the top of the cave. It is a truly magical spectacle that attracts thousands of people, and we will make sure not to miss out.
