August 15th is a public holiday and the biggest religious event in Greece after Easter and Christmas where Greeks all over the country are celebrating the Dormition of Virgin Mary.

Churches celebrate the feast with mass and prayers in the morning and in the evening, while the formal religious ceremony is held during the day.

Due to their Orthodox faith, many Greeks choose to prepare themselves by fasting.
