Christmas is in the air and at Oscar Suites & Village Hotel in Platanias Chania, we can not help but feel like kids again! This is the time to rejoice and to be merry; and though, a few kilometers away from our Hotel in Platanias, Chania– our lovely seaside town– is not your typical Northern European winter wonderland (yet we do get our fair share of snow, in the surrounding-aptly called-White Mountains), in fact in Christmas, it is particularly dashing-not to mention exceedingly fun!
Here the age old custom of decorating model sailing boats for Christmas, is very much alive. After all the people of Chania have always been accomplished seamen and the Christmas boat has been their special way of saying welcome back to the men folk of the family-husbands, sons, brothers and fathers-who toiled away at sea for months on end, while women waited for their safe return at home.
But Chania is also a vibrant, contemporary city; so the western influenced tradition of the ornamented Christmas tree, also holds a prominent place in the season’s festivities.
Sparkling trees and sailing boats hence coexist and along with the countless twinkling lights, create a stunning, fairytale effect throughout the city.
Harmoniously blending local and imported traditions, picturesque Chania is certainly aesthetically pleasing during Christmas. But it is so much more than that.
With so many things going on, the city wears -and acts- its best, during the 12 days of Christmas. Children’s choirs singing traditional Cretan carols at the municipal market; various festive bazaars; our lovely carousel and ice rink; a plethora of musical concerts, theatrical plays, art exhibitions and parties at the Center of Mediterranean Architecture, and around town. Indeed there is enough to keep us busy as well as rigorously entertained!
But perhaps above all, there is the famous Santa Run: Since 2011, when a group of friends first introduced this charity, fun, run event, it has been undoubtedly the pinnacle of the festivities, as hordes of red clad Santas -young and old alike-, every December parade through the city, dancing, blowing whistles, and generally having a jolly good time. Some even take to the sea in canoes, kayaks and paddleboards! The whole thing culminates to a big outdoor party with live music -including traditional Cretan lyras– in which the whole town-as well as several visitors from all over Crete-participate in.
This year the 7th Santa Run will take place on December 23rd and aims to raise over 100.000 euros for a host of children’s charities that help and support kids with disabilities and health problems. At Oscar Suites & Village Hotel in Platanias Chania we are great advocates of the Santa Run-after all it is an amalgam of a noble cause and immense fun; which absolutely agrees with the philosophy of our cozy, family style Hotel in Platanias Chania.
