Christmas is on its way! It’s a time of year that brings to mind images of log cabins, snow covered streets and escaping the cold with family and friends huddled around a fire. A long way from the sun-drenched beaches and turquoise blue seas that Crete is best known for! But, while we may not always have winter weather (though we do get quite a bit of snow in the mountains), we do like to get in the festive spirit in Crete, and nowhere is that more in evidence than in Chania during the annual Santa Run!
The Chania Santa Run
Every December just after Christmas a horde of Santas descends on the city of Chania to take part in the amazing Santa Run. This fantastic event attracts a huge amount of visitors, with around 7,000 people travelling from all over Crete to don Santa costumes and complete a 3.5km course around the historic city. The Chania Santa Run raises money for a host of children’s charities in Greece that provide help and support to kids with a variety of disabilities and health problems. The 2016 Chania Santa Run will take place on Monday, December 26th.
You probably know all about Chania already as it is the second largest city in Crete. On your last holiday in Crete, you may have even flown into Chania Airport, which is one of the main international airports on the island. It handles flights from all over Europe throughout the summer and domestic flights to and from the Greek mainland all year round. As Chania is less than 10 kilometres away from us here at the Oscar Suites & Village hotel in Agia Marina Platanias, it’s an ideal holiday day trip destination, with a beautiful Venetian harbour port, a fascinating history, and a host of other attractions and highlights.
Festive Winter Wonderland in Chania
Chania really gets into the festive spirit when the Santa Run arrives, and there’s a real carnival atmosphere throughout the city as a red sea of Santa Clauses made up of adults and children flows through the city dancing, blowing whistles, and generally having a fantastic time! The route includes a trip around Chania’s old harbour, and the sight of it filled with Santas (some of them even taking to the sea in canoes, kayaks and paddleboards) is truly something to behold! At the end of the Santa Run event there’s a great big outdoor party with live music (including traditional Cretan lyras) and lots of fun and dancing.
History of the Santa Run Chania
The Chania Santa Run was originally set up by a group of friends in 2011 as a fun run event that would take place on or around Boxing Day, the 26th of December. Over the course of 5 years the run has grown into a charity event and become more and more successful, in the process raising €240,000 for the 4 children’s charities it supports. For this year’s 6th Chania Santa Run the organisers are hoping the run will be the biggest ever, and are aiming to raise €100,000 from this year’s event alone. Donations for the charities are collected from the Santa Run participants, who each pay to take part in the event and receive a costume and goody bag. Throughout December the event organisers also set up a ‘Santa Run House’ by the square near Chania’s central municipal market selling festive gifts and memorabilia. There’s no racing against the clock or competition on the fun run, it’s all about a massive group of happy people enjoying themselves and partying, and raising some money for charity in the process!
