On first sight, Kastelli does not look like a town full of fascinating things to do, but the truth is quite otherwise.

Located 40 km away from the city of Chania, Kastelli is a town that goes by two names, both Kastelli and Kissamos. Kastelli used to be at constantly high risk for attacks by pirates, which is why they built a protective castle, Kastelli, which you can see the remains of today. The name Kissamos on the other hand, dates from before Hellenic times, and its derivation is uncertain. A visit to the Archaelogical Museum of Kissamos in the old Venetian´s governor´s palace is worth the visit if you want to learn more about the history of this spectacular region.

Kastelli or Kissamos is a town with long cultural history and lively atmosphere. Despite the shy number of 3000 inhabitants, it is a busy town all year around. It is the ideal place to visit if you want to explore the life of the locals as Kastelli offers many shops and cafes and also has a beautiful harbor with many traditional taverns along the seaside. It is a must to eat seafood in Kastelli, and in many restaurants you are even welcomed into the kitchen to pick out your meal. Try grilled octopus and sardines with local wild greens with olive oil and lemons! The town is the agricultural centre of the region and majors in wine and olives.

Kissamos is also home to some of the world`s most beautiful beaches, Elafonissi, Balos – Gramvousa and Falassarna, which are highly recommended points of interest.
