Tired of the long, bleak winter? Good news is that spring has finally arrived! Which in Crete means no less than clear blue, sunny skies and a carpet of green, dotted with red, yellow and blue wildflowers, covering the ground. But this Monet-esque kind of synthesis -indeed a sight for sore eyes– is not the only reason for which you should opt for a springtime escapade at the Oscar Suites & Village best hotel in Platanias.
Read on for why you should base yourselves at the Oscar Suites & Village best hotel in Platanias for a sneak holiday preview at this time of the year.
With grey, laden skies at this time of the year; sunny, Greece is no longer (not everyday anyway!). Even though we are currently at the heart of the cold, bleak winter, fact is that spring is just a couple of months away. And a sure proof way of overcoming the seasonal blues, I’ve discovered, is thinking about my favorite holiday spots and Crete in particular: A little slice of heaven on earth, really; imbued with a striking natural beauty, fascinating historical sites, abundant cultural life, authentic people and postcard perfect towns. Like Chania; famously the most picturesque of them all. Yet despite of its manifold charms, Chania tends to get packed and noisy at times. So another thing I’ve realized is that whilst holidaying in the area, it’s actually best to stay nearby, rather than inside this undoubtedly charming town. Just 9 km away Agia Marina-Platanias is a beautiful, seaside settlement; quaint and lively at the same time.
After a long -and quite harsh- winter, summer is finally here to stay. No doubt your spirits are considerably lifted in view of the upcoming holidays. Downside is that your holidays are still far away, and you’re currently stuck in the big city. Good news is that it is actually very easy to do yourself a great favor and treat yourself, and yours, to a sneaky vacation preview-even for as little as a long weekend.
The Chania region, and its beautiful beach resort, Platanias, is always a great place to visit, but especially so at this time of the year. Nature is at its best, the weather is sunny and mild, waters are cool and crystal clear, food and drinks are as always copious and delightful, the hordes of tourists are absent still, and the locals, not yet tired and frustrated from the season, are at their most jovial and kind. Plus there are always the low cost carriers, which indeed will carry you here for a symbolic, low cost.
Easter was as always splendid in Agia Marina, Chania. For it might be transformed into a tourist Mecca during the summer, but it is in essence a picturesque, quaint village, which meticulously observes the age old customs and traditions that make Easter the most important holiday in the Greek world. So throughout the Holy week we once more partook in the baking of sweet breads and “koulourakia”, we dyed our eggs red, solemnly sang along the candle- lit processions and thoroughly enjoyed the magnificent Easter Sunday celebrations. But upon ceremoniously feasting on the exquisitely seasoned spit roast lamb, and-in typical Cretan fashion-danced and drunk our worries away, we got down to (serious) business.
For at Oscar Suites & Village we had plenty to do before our hotel opening for the 2017 summer season on April 21st.
Crete is undoubtedly charismatic but its outstanding natural beauty reaches its peak in spring time. After the winter rains the island is at its greenest and is literally carpeted with flowers;wild orchids and wildflowers are at their prime, and their intoxicating smells and vivid colours- whites, reds, purples, yellows- create an enchanting scenery. Yet mother nature’s magic is but one lure. Crete on early spring is a great holiday destination for another plain, yet important reason: It is off peak season, which means that all those sites that one simply must visit when in Crete -from Chania old town to the famous historical monuments scattered around the island-are not overcrowded with zealous tourists. It also means that you will have more time with the locals: you will be greeted everywhere with a huge smile, served like royalty and chatted up by friendly faces. Plus, the weather, with temperatures averaging 20 C- not too hot, but warm enough-are just perfect for hiking gorges and trails and strolling around quaint villages and historic towns. Granted, venturing into the beach and the water is not for the faint hearted, but the bolder ones do attempt their first dives even as early as late March, in the hotter parts of the island, especially in the South!

Easter in Crete is certainly something for itself as it is the most important holiday of the year. Today, Sunday, is the celebration of the Greek Orthodox Easter where the day is enjoyed to its fullest by serving many traditional recipes in the company of family and friends.
Greek Orthodox households grill a whole lamb – “souvla”, as it symbols Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross, and eat “kokoretsi” which is the lamb’s liver wrapped with the intestines. During Easter, the Greeks greet each other with the phrase “Christ has risen” and respond with “Truly he has risen”.

April 24th is the date when we once again will open our doors to welcome new and old friends to our sunny spot in Agia Marina.
One can simply not overlook the fact that the summer is coming to an end here in Chania. October 1st started off with heavy, dark clouds, giving us a glimpse of what winter is like in Crete. Light rain showers in the morning made sure to freshen up the air, giving us spring-like weather when the sun finally made its appearance through the clouds. Today, our beloved guests took advantage of the weather to go hiking and exploring the area, visiting the old town of Agia Marina with its beautiful church up-hill and traditional and cozy Greek taverns, photographing the power of the waves at the beach and shopping downtown in the picturesque city of Chania. As the afternoon sun came out, the summer was back and the sunloungers quickly filled up around the pool.
With 41 days left of this year’s summer at Oscar Suites & Village, the sky is full of surprises. Summer and winter are embracing each other, giving us beautiful and warm beach days as well as the ideal days (or hours) to get wonderfully lost among the charming narrow streets in the old town of Chaniá, Greece.
