Discover Chania old town

Easily accessible by bus or rental car, Chania is not to be missed. Among its notable sights are the picturesque Venetian harbor, the trademark lighthouse, the cross shaped municipal market -where you will find all the goods of the blessed Cretan land, Firkas fortress with the Maritime Museum, Yali Mosque, the Splantzia with the huge plane tree in its center that offers a much sought repose from the heat, the old Turkish quarter where you’ll see the imposing St. Nicholas Church, the only one in Greece that holds both a belfry and minaret.

There is also the bustling Eleftherios Venizelos Square in the heart of the old town, as well as numerous shops, taverns and restaurants, next to important historical monuments in the cobblestone, narrow alleys, seemingly blending the present with the past.

See the sunset at Falassarna

A wooded landscape, thick, golden sand and blue waters as far as the eye can see. Falassarna is undoubtedly one of the most popular beaches in Crete. Though most of the coast is organized with umbrellas and sunbeds, still there is some free space, if you’re looking for peace and quiet.

Be alternative

One of the most unique natural wonders of the region is the Lake of Kournas in Apokoronas about 45 km from the city. It is the only natural freshwater lake in Crete, and as the summer waters slightly recede, several small beaches are formed on the shore. You’ ll find umbrellas, sunbeds and small cafes to provide you with the essentials, but also you’ll get the opportunity to rent a marine bicycle to admire the striking landscape in the green lake.

Go exotic

Elafonisi is world famous and not without (a very) good reason. Picture an exotic scenery with expansive sand dunes, huge cedars, white lilies, black rocks, rare species of indigenous animals and birds, emerald waters and pink-white sand. It can’t go more sublimely beautiful than that! Make sure not to miss it!

If you’re a bit of a sucker for stories, shortly before Elafonisi, lies the Monastery of Chrysoskalitissa: A whitewashed monastery, perched high on a large rock of 35 meters with breathtaking views of the Libyan Sea. According to myth, one of its 90 steps, which lead to the top, is made of gold, but only the ones with a pure heart can discern it!

In the same direction there is also Balos: A sandy lagoon with turquoise waters that is bound to leave you speechless. It’s best to visit it by land. Though this requires driving on a (passable) dirt road and then a 15 minutes hike to the beach, the amazing view will certainly recompense you. Otherwise, you may catch one of the boats that depart daily from Kissamos.
